1.Any counselor will tell you that, " The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem." I don't want to exaggerate the point, but it is worth mentioning because most of us will keep tripping over the same pile of stuff until we finally get tired of it and do something about it.
2.Look at the big picture, what is it that you are trying to accomplish, ie; organizing the sports equipment in the garage or maximizing the space in your master bedroom closet. Create a list of items that must stay, and a list of items that can be moved elsewhere. (I am a big fan of lists they keep you on task)
3. a. What is a reasonable time frame for your project to be completed? b. Will you be doing the work yourself or hiring a professional?
4. If you are a DIY'er than pick a day NOW! Do not procrastinate, the sooner you commit to your project the sooner it will be accomplished. If your free time is limited, or if you would rather let a pro deal with the mess than call today, RIGHT NOW!
Again do not procrastinate, the likelyhood of you remembering to call for a consultation after you have gone onto something else is slim to none.
These are very basic points, but than would you follow a long drawn out tutorial? Probably not.
I would be remiss in this blog if I didn't leave my e-mail, web address and phone number for you to get in touch with us.

I don't need to remind anybody that we are in very unsure economic times. Everywhere we turn the attitude is, "Let's wait and see" and to some extent I agree with that, but How long do we wait?
Wow, that was encouraging, HUH...
As I look toward the future as I know many of you do, I see that Americans are a resilient people with alot of tenacity and drive to succeed. As more and more people start to realize that the end of the world is not upon us and we go about living our lives just like we did before, we enjoy the pleasures of family and friends, our childrens sports activities, an unplanned trip to the beach, and a whole lot more. I believe it is then that we are most aware that we are truly blessed and should be thankful for all that we do have.
As the owner and president of New England Closet Design, I am thankful everday for the opportunity to work in a industry that allows us to work with so many great people, The organizational industry is still alive and well and continues to give our clients great value for there hard earned money.
I wanted to take this opportunity to share with all of you, that we will continue to offer you a great product at a fair price, and to leave you with a few things to look for when you are shopping for a custom built organizational system.
1.) Always check for references from previous customers; at New England Closet Design we are happy to furnish potential customers with an exhaustive list of very satisfied customers (Many of them repeat customers I might ad) That will always be the true test of a solid company.
2.) Is your "Custom Closet" custom built?, Many "Custom Closet Companies" are not really custom at all, they purchase there product line from an online company and basically just do the install. That would'nt be all bad if the product and installation that was sold was top quality, (Which it is not). Many companies in the industry today will use a 5/8" thick material with inferior hardware and a substandard installation process. (See my earlier blog article, "Are all Custom Closets created equal") It is always good to remember, you do get what you pay for. Check us out there is a difference.
3.) Quality vs Price, always check that the company you are looking into uses only the best materials, the best installation practices and backs them up with an unconditional lifetime guarantee, We Do!
When you build it right the first time it will last forever. And remember the difference in price from the so called "Custom Closet Guy's" and us is not as big a difference as they would tell you.
On an average Walk-In closet the difference in price could be as much as $ 200-$300, and remember that is for a closet that is not even in the same league as ours.
4.) Check the BBB (Better Business Bureau) this will tell you if the company you use is reputable and has a good rating in the industry. Just a little info. Not all companies are members of the BBB, but that does not effect the information that you get from this great resource, any company that is registered to do work in there home state will be in there data base.
5.) Make sure they are insured, and that all there workers are insured as well, In the event of a problem you will glad that you checked on this detail.
6.) What will my home look like after? The installation process in most cases will take only a day, and after the install comes the cleanup. At New England Closet Design we believe that not only are you hiring the best company, but you are purchasing an experience. With that in mind all of our installers will make sure that your home looks as good or better after we have left. This includes the use of slippers or booties when we are in your home as well as the final vaccum after the last shelf is installed.
This list by no means is exhaustive, but I believe it can give you a great platform to gather information on anyone that will be doing work in your home.
So, go ahead and endulge yourself in the very best that the organizational industry has to offer, you will not only be making it easier to get dressed in the morning, but you will be stimulating the economy as well, and adding resale value to your home.
Thanks again for your time and enjoy the summer,
Mike

The ultimate in stylish organization
Something not necessarily featured in tours of celebrity homes is the walk-in closets and pantries. But imagine if you had all the resources in the world. What kind of organizing spaces would you create?
First, you'd want to consider the sheer size of your collection of whatever. If you're like Kimora Lee Simmons of Baby Phat clothing fame, you need some 49,000 square feet to house not only your clothes, but a mini-bar, flat-screen tv, and marble columns.
Mariah Carey only requires 12,000 square feet to house her 1,000 pairs of shoes and Louis Vuitton luggage, but the space is climate-controlled and fits well in her Manhattan triplex digs.
The modest Paula Abdul only needs 5,000 square feet for her collection of shoes and accessories, but her array of footwear, sunglasses, and belts looks like a veritable boutique.
How about this dressing room closet from the movie, Something's Gotta Give? Really can't get more elegantly organized than this. Nicky Hilton's closet is similarly tasteful, with glass door cabinets, and this time with a black and white, more modern motif. Apparently, she's a handbag fanatic and needs room for her 200+ items.
Celebrity walk-in closets usually include furniture that invites lounging as you decide on the perfect outfit, or just sit back and enjoy your fantastic wardrobe. An easy chair or chaise is often paired with a luxuriously soft rug or pieds-à-terre.
For the gentlemen, the celebrity look may drop the rug in favor of a gleaming hardwood floor, but the lounge is still de rigueur. Design guru Nate Berkus, for example, ties his blue and yellow walls together with a simple gray-and-white striped cotton rug and plush benches. Taken together, the 'room' itself looks a bit like a well-dressed executive.
As you can see, celebrities each have their own tastes, and there's no such thing as the perfect walk-in closet for everyone. What do you collect? What would your dream organizing space look like?

It happens every year, as we transition from winter to spring the inevitable always takes place; The dreaded spring cleanup...
Here in the northeast winters can be pretty rough on everything, including the inhabitants. Inside the home one of the issues we deal with is where to put all those winter clothes, now that the more desireable weather is coming. If your like most, it's stuff and pile time in your closets, You know what I mean...
There is a solution, and you probably guessed it, Yes space optimization, just a fancy phrase to describe making use of the space you already have, just more efficiently.
Let our team of professional designers, and installers show you how you can actually like your closets again, and not break the bank in the process.
One more topic to discuss...
The same principles used in the home can be used in another trouble spot, Yes the garage.
Slatwall Products:
Over the years many manufacturers of slat wall products have cropped up, on websites as well as in magazines.
In my opinion none compare to Storewall, it is both attractive and tough, standing up to the demands that a garage was designed to dish out.
Look for more posts on our site as well as a full retail store, where you can purchase slatwall and slatwall accessories right from the comfort of your home. (Coming soon)
If you choose to have NECD install your slatwall garage system, you will rest easy knowing that from the start of your project, to the very last accessory attached, You are hiring a dedicated team of professionals that are here to make the process easy to understand as well as functional, and attractive.
If your a DIY'er, we will be here to stear you in the right direction, and give you the customer support you need when you have questions.
As always thanks for reading the ramblings of a man who loves organization. Is that an oximoron?

Here is an article I found while browsing through the latest edition of Closet Magazine.
This article explains the difference between two different installations of a wall hung closet system.
I am looking forward to some feedback on this article.

I have seen a hanging system that relies on a 45 degree "angle iron" to be fastened to the wall, and then the modular sides to be hung off it via some, "routs" on the back sides. Does anybody know a source for that piece of angle? What I have seen appears to be painted and has holes across the bottom edge.
Thanks in advance!

Re: 45 degree hanging angle iron???
I've seen this system used by a few companies and I don't recommend it. I know I'll draw some flak from those who currently use it, but as an installer with over a decade of experience, I believe it's possibly the worst wall mounted system on the market. The notch routed into the panel creates a fracture point about an inch to an inch and a quarter deep. Melamine is simply particle board, sawdust and wood glue holding hands. Expansion and contraction of melamine due to temp and humidity weakens the structure of this route over time, multiplied by overtaxing of the material due to loads most clients try to stuff into the average system. Then there is the installation aspect. No wall is truly flat, and the notch in the panel will be stressed from the initial installation on due to the non scribed nature of the system. In order to get these perfect rectangles to join together, and function properly, there needs to be some degree of adjustability to get the flat back of the system to hang against the waves of the wall.
I recommend the rail and bracket system available from Hafelea and a few other vendors. It allows adjustment vertically as well as away from the wall, making the system perfectly level and snug to the wall everytime without creating a stress point in the material.

Closets:
It seems like every year you find yourself spending more time organizing your closet than actually enjoying your closet.
Here are a few tips that may help;
1. Look at the overall space of the closet, are you expecting to much from your closet. Taking out items that are rarely worn (Like that long ball gown in plastic), and putting them in another area will help you with the items you will need on a daily basis.
2.Double hanging bars, this is our claim to fame in the closet industry. Most items in a standard closet are usually hung at single hang height, ie; shirts, blouses, pants slacks hung over a hanger. The standard pole and shelf found in most closets with a pole height of around 68" leaves unused space below and above. The double hanging bar system allows you to maximize your closet space by positioning your hanging clothes on top of each other thus gaining that space horizontally. This allows you to keep the same amount of pole space, and add needed shelving, drawers, or more hanging.
I hope this has helped you to feel better about your closet, whatever size it is...

Have you ever wondered why there is never enough storage in your kitchen?
Some of the blame could be that we are saving to much stuff... Come on be honest, but what if there was a way to save most of our items and organize them for ease of use, Would'nt that be great. Well...
Adding a floor mounted shelving unit with adjustable shelves may just be the answer. With a variety of depths and heights to choose from you can pick which custom fit unit will work for you.
It solves a a multitude of storage issues like; how to store bulk items, what to do with that electric griddle when you are not using it, and the adjustability you need for different sized items that the wire shelves can't, and the fear of overloading those wire shelves after coming back from the can sale at the grocery store. I am sure there are more but you get the idea.
Take a look at our photo gallery to get more ideas on space saving, and attractive looking organizational systems.
